STAFF COMPUTATION

STAFF COMPUTATION

Staffing Requirement:

Nursing service personnel are very essential to provide care to the sick. Consideration need to be given to the number required on a yearly basis. Weekly basis and daily basis.

Definition:

Requirement is defined as the personnel necessary to provide the health services demanded by a state or a region’s population.

Steps in projecting staffing needs:

1. Identify the components of nursing care & nursing service.

2. Define the standards of patient care to be maintained.

3. Estimate the average number of nursing hours needed for the patient.

4. Determine the proportion of nursing hours to be provided by registered nurses.

5. Determine auxillary nursing service hours to be provided by ward clerks, messengers and the like.

6. Define registered nurse positions (staff nurse, head nurse, team leader, supervisor, clinical nurse specialist & nursing service administrator).

7. Determine policies regarding these positions & for rotation of personnel.

The master staffing plan considers existing agency policies such as vacation, holidays, hours of work, leave or absence, rotation of personnel, & sick time allowance based on average days of illness (annually)

Earned Leave – 30 Monthly 6 off 6×12=72 55+

Casual Leave – 10 72

Sick Leave – 10 127

RH – 2

GH – 3 365-

127

Total 55 working days 238

238 = 34 wks. [Out of 52 wks one

7 days a week works only 34 wks of

the year]

Registered nurse 67%

Auxillary nurse 33%

Step 1: Find the total number of general nursing hours needed in one year

a) Average patient census ×average nursing hours per patient per 24 hours ×days in a week × weeks in a year.

500 ×3.4×7×52 =618800 (study NLN result is 3.4 hrs per patient)

Step 2: Find the number of general nursing hours needed in one year which should be given by registered nurses & the number which should be given by auxillary nursing personnel.

a) No. of general nursing hours per year × % to be given by registered nurse

618800×67 = 414596 Prof. Hrs

100

b) No. of general nursing has per year × % to be given by auxillary nursing personnel = 618800×33 = 204200 auxillary

100

Step 3: Find the no. of registered nurses & auxillary nursing personnel required on a yearly basis.

a) Registered nurses hours needed per year divided by hours given per year by one registered nurse.

(Hours on duty weekly per nurse ×weeks on duty during year/nurse)

8 Hrs. in a day per week 8×6=48

Per week 48 Hrs. into a year 48×34=1632

414596 ÷ 1632=254.04 =254

b) Auxillary nursing Hrs. needed per year divided by hours given per year by one person (has on duty weekly per person × weeks on duty during year by auxillary person)

204204 ÷ 1632=125.12=125

Nurses assigned on weekly basis:

  1. Find the total number of general nursing hours needed in one week.

Average patient census × average nursing hrs/patient in 24 hrs × days in a week

500×3.4×7=11900

  1. Find out the Number of general nursing hrs needed in the week which should be given by registered nurses & the number could be given by auxillary nurses.

a) No. of general nursing hrs per week × % to be given by registered nurses

11900×67 = 7973

10

b) No. of general nursing hrs per week × % to be given by auxillary nurses

11900 × 33 = 3927

100

  1. Find out the no. of prof nursing personnel & auxillary personnel on a weekly basis

a) Registered nurses has needed per week ÷ has on duty weekly per nurse

7973 ÷ 48=166

b) Auxillary nursing personnel nursing has needed per week ÷ by has on duty weekly per auxillary nursing personnel.

3927 ÷ 48 =82

Computation on Daily Basis:

Step I: Find the fraction of prof. & non prof. general nursing personally, regularly assigned to the unit on a weekly basis who are on duty daily.

No. of working days each week ÷ total days in a week

6

6÷7 = 0.85

7

Step II: Find the no. of prof. general nursing personnel

166×0.86 = 142.76 =143

Auxillary on duty 82 × 0.86 = 70.52=71

500 Bedded hospital/ day require 143 Prof. Nursing personnel

500 Bedded hospital/ day require 71 auxillary nurses
